The long-awaited UFC 251: Usman vs. Masvidal mega card finally happens Saturday. The loaded event features three title fights, emanating from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The venue, called “Fight Island” by UFC president Dana White, will host the fight card without fans in attendance. This allows the main card to go live at 6 a.m. local Abu Dhabi time, which puts the event on in prime time in the U.S.
The UFC 251 main card begins at 8 p.m. MDT, giving Colorado fight fans a major sports event to look forward to this Saturday night.
Three Championships On The Line
Usman vs. Masvidal: UFC Welterweight Championship
A UFC Welterweight Championship bout headlines the card. Champion Kamaru Usman defends the belt against challenger Jorge Masvidal.
Masvidal stepped in as a replacement for Gilbert Burns, who was originally scheduled to challenge Usman. Burns tested positive for COVID-19, however, and had to pull out of the fight.
The unfortunate circumstance for Burns set up Masvidal for the biggest opportunity of his career. Masvidal took the fight against Usman on less than a week’s notice.
Masvidal (35-13) comes into the fight on a streak of three consecutive knockout victories. He’ll face the biggest challenge of his career against Usman (16-1), who’s won 15 consecutive fights and is making his second welterweight title defense.
DraftKings Sportsbook favors Usman (-230) against the underdog Masvidal (+185).
Volkanovsky vs. Holloway: UFC Featherweight Championship
UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski takes on challenger Max Holloway in the secondary main event.
This fight is a rematch of a championship bout at UFC 245 in December 2019. Volkanovski won the championship from Holloway in the fight, and the UFC 251 rematch marks Volkanovski’s first title defense.
Volkanovski (21-1) comes into the event on an 18-fight winning streak. The first match between Volkanovski and Holloway (21-5) went all five rounds, with Volkanovski winning in a unanimous decision.
FanDuel Sportsbook sets Volkanovski as the favorite (-198) against the underdog Holloway (+166).
Yan vs. Aldo: UFC Bantamweight Championship
The vacant UFC Bantamweight Championship will go to the winner of the Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo match. Previous championship holder Henry Cejudo retired after making his final title defense at UFC 249 in May 2020.
Aldo (28-6) is considered one of the best featherweight fighters in UFC history, but is 0-1 at the bantamweight class. Yan (14-1) comes into the fight on the back of nine consecutive wins.
FOX Bet Sportsbook sets Yan (-213) as the favorite to win the title, with Aldo (+175) as the underdog.
