History Of Denver Broncos Championships

The Denver Broncos own a history as one of the most successful teams in the NFL. The Broncos’ resumé includes eight AFC Championships, each of which resulted in a Super Bowl appearance.

Denver came away with wins in three of those games, taking the Lombardi Trophy In Super Bowl XXXII (1997), Super Bowl XXXIII (1998), and Super Bowl 50 (2015).

All three NFL Championships for the Broncos came at the hands of legendary quarterbacks.

John Elway stands as perhaps the most hallowed figure in Broncos history. Elway played quarterback for Denver from 1983-1998 and currently acts as the team’s general manager.

Elway took the Broncos to five Super Bowls overall. Denver lost in those first three championship opportunities, but Elway led the Broncos to consecutive championships in 1997 and 1998, the final two years of his Hall of Fame career.

Future Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning joined the team from 2012-2015, taking the team to a pair of Super Bowls. Like Elway, Manning finished off his career with a Super Bowl win with the Broncos, retiring after Super Bowl 50.

NFL Super Bowl Odds And Betting

Moneyline bets present the simplest way to bet on the Super Bowl. This bet offers the chance to bet on which team will win the game, straight up.

Point Spread

This kind of wager adds a point spread to the Super Bowl bet, adding points to the underdog’s final score and subtracting from the favorite.

Also known as over/under betting, totals wagers place a bet on whether the total points scored in the Super Bowl will finish above or below a line set by the sportsbook.

Parlays bets are still on the table for Super Bowl Sunday. Parlays combine multiple bets on one ticket and allow for different kinds of bets on the same ticket. A Super Bowl parlay, for instance, could combine a point spread, totals bet, and a prop bet.

What Is An NFL Futures Bet?

A futures sports bet wagers on an event with a duration longer than a single game. Examples of NFL futures bets could include wagers on what player will win the league’s rushing title, or what player will win the NFL MVP.

The most popular way to make an NFL futures bet is to wager on the Super Bowl champion. A Super Bowl futures bet can be made at any time of the year, up until the teams playing in the game are determined.

Odds on different teams can change drastically throughout the year. As soon as the Super Bowl is finished, sportsbooks quickly offer futures odds on the following season.

What Is A Super Bowl Prop Bet?

Prop bets involve wagering on an event not directly related to the outcome of the game.

Some prop bets involve in-game statistics or accolades for certain players. For example, a prop bet from Super Bowl LIV put +110 odds on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes winning the game’s MVP award. Another prop bet from the game offered a totals wager on whether 49ers running back Raheem Mostert would finish over or under 80.5 rushing yards.

Other Super Bowl prop bets offer wagering on things that don’t even involve the game played in the field. Most of these wagers fall into the category of exotic prop bets, the category used to describe wagers that largely rely on luck, instead of bettor skill.

One such example includes a prop bet on which team will win the Super Bowl coin toss, which finds its way onto sportsbook betting menus every year.

How Super Bowl Betting Odds Are Calculated

Moneyline (American Odds)

Moneyline odds, aka American odds, represent the default betting odds notation used by most US sportsbooks.

Here’s a look at the moneyline odds from Super Bowl LIV, according to BetMGM:

TeamMoneyline Odds
San Francisco 49ers+105
Kansas City Chiefs

Moneyline odds with a “+” notation displays the amount of profit awarded on a winning $100 bet. A $100 bet on the 49ers, for example, would yield $105 in profit if it wins.

How To Calculate Positive Moneyline Odds

A $100 bet on San Francisco would result in the sportsbook returning $205 ($105 profit plus the original $100 bet) if the 49ers won. Another way to calculate “+” odds is to divide the line by 100, then multiply that number by the size of the bet.

Using this method, dividing 105 by 100 yields 1.05. You can then multiply the size of a wager by 1.05 to figure out the profit earned.

A $50 winning bet on +105 odds, for instance, yields $52.50 in profit ($50 x 1.05).

How To Calculate Negative Moneyline Odds

The “-“ odds set on Kansas City in this example denote the amount of a wager needed to win $100 profit. A $121 bet on Chiefs, for example, would net $100 profit, with the sportsbook returning a total of $221 to the bettor if the Chiefs won ($100 profit plus the original $121 bet).

To calculate “-“ odds for any bet size, divide 100 by the moneyline number. For the bet on Kansas City listed above, dividing 100 by 121 yields 0.826 (rounded off).

Multiplying any bet size by 0.826 gives you the total profit made in the Chiefs won. A $100 bet yields $82.60 in profit, for example.

Point Spread

The point spread on Super Bowl LIV from BetMGM looked like this:

TeamPoints Spread and Odds
San Francisco 49ers+1.5      (-112)
Kansas City Chiefs-1.5       (-106)

Using this line, bettors can take the 49ers with 1.5 points added to their final score, or the Chiefs with 1.5 points subtracted from their final score. The odds next to the point spread are calculated using the moneyline/American odds method detailed above.

The final score of Super Bowl LIV ended with Kansas City winning the game 31-20. That result made the Chiefs the winner on the point spread.

With the -1.5 spread applied to the final score, the Chiefs still won the bet by a 29.5-20 score. Had Kansas City won the game by one point, or lost the game, the 49ers would have been the point spread winner.

The point spread bet on the Chiefs paid out at -106 odds. Using the calculation method for “-“ moneyline odds, a $100 bet on the Chiefs resulted in $94.30 in profit.

Futures Odds

Futures odds use the moneyline notation at most US sportsbooks. Here’s another look at futures odds on the 2021-2022 Super Bowl Champion for three of Colorado’s top online sportsbooks:

Kansas City ChiefsTampa Bay BuccaneersBuffalo BillsLos Angeles RamsSan Francisco 49ersBonus Offers
DraftKings Sportsbook+500+550+1100+1200+140020% Deposit Match up to $1,000
BetMGM+475+600+1300+1200+1300Risk-Free Bet up to $1,000
BetRivers+475+600+1300+1300+1300100% Deposit Match up to $500

Suppose you placed a $100 bet on the Baltimore Ravens to win Super Bowl LVI using the +650 line offered at these three online sportsbooks. If the Ravens win the Super Bowl, that bet yields $650 in profit.

Futures odds can change dramatically throughout the season. The odds displayed above represent preseason odds as of August 2020.

If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost their first four games, for example, the line on the Bucs winning the Super Bowl would drop to much longer odds to reflect the 0-4 start. Such a start to the season could change the odds on Tampa Bay to something like +10000.
